Looking ahead. Through a wholly owned French subsidiary, Aurania Resources applied for an exploration license in the Brittany Peninsula of northwestern France. The concession area has historically been the site of significant high-grade gold finds. Aurania’s interest in the area is attributed to the discovery of several exceptionally high-grade gold samples, two on display at the Natural History Museum in Paris and one in the possession of a private collector, from the same locale. A December 2022 visit to the place of origin revealed abundant quartz vein material on surface along with evidence of mining activity in the 1800s.

Reaching an accommodation in Ecuador. On July 31, Dr. Keith Barron, Aurania’s CEO, will meet with Ecuador’s Minister of Energy and Mines to discuss options to recover concessions that were initially applied for in 2016 but not granted. Because the concessions were initially held in reserve for Aurania, the company conducted airborne geophysics that revealed over 100 discrete magnetic porphyry type targets in the concession area held in reserve. Please refer to our research noted dated June 16, 2023 for more detail.

Release – Aurania Applies For Exploration License In Brittany, France

Research News and Market Data on AUAIF

Aurania Resources Ltd. (TSXV: ARU; OTCQB: AUIAF; Frankfurt: 20Q) (“Aurania” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce it has applied for an exploration license in the Brittany Peninsula of northwestern France through a wholly-owned French subsidiary. The concession area, which includes Hennebont in the Morbihan Department, has historically been the site of significant high-grade gold finds. Placer gold in streams is present in the vicinity of the area.

In December 2022, a very large and high-grade gold specimen was displayed at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum) in Paris, France. Museum staff estimates this sample of 3.31 kilograms weight to contain one kilo of gold; it is considered the highest-grade gold sample currently known in France (Figure 1). It consists of vuggy coarse white quartz and native gold. Gold within the vugs is crystalline in nature (Figure 2). The sample is displayed next to a dendritic crystalline gold sample from the same locality (Figures 3 and 4).

Figure 1: High-grade gold specimen in the Natural History Museum, Paris, estimated to contain one kilogram of gold.

Figure 2: Vug in the quartz vein sample, approximately one centimetre across, containing drusy quartz and crystalline native gold.

Figure 3: Gold sample displayed next to a dendritic crystalline gold sample from the same locality.

Figure 4: Description of gold sample at the Natural History Museum in Paris. “Native gold in quartz vein, piece of vein containing more than 1 kilogram of gold, largest sample found in France kept as is, Bank of France deposit (loan)”.

Aurania’s team became aware of the sample last year and approached the museum staff as to its origins and provenance. We were told the samples were purchased by the Banque de France and were on loan to the Museum and that they supposedly came from an old collection.  Museum staff supplied us with an article from the Journal du Morbihan, a newspaper dated August 13, 1875 and entitled “Le quartz aurifere dans le Morbihan”, and an extract from a book published by L’Abbe Henry Breuil, described in Wikipedia as a “French Catholic priest, archaeologist, anthropologist, ethnologist and geologist” and one of the principal early investigators of the cave paintings at Lascaux. Breuil examined a sample weighing 1,400 grams “with a little adhering quartz” that was found in 1875 and acquired by a jeweller. The son of the jeweller said his father had also purchased a nugget of 800 grams at the same time. The newspaper article said that two pieces of auriferous quartz were discovered by road builders 400 metres apart and that one was broken into a piece weighing 117 grams and a piece weighing about 900 grams. A third piece of 1,470 grams was found separately and purchased by the jeweller. The description continued, “These ores are gold-bearing quartz, very rich in gold, even excessively so. This gold is not compact, it is crystalline.”

Aurania’s President and CEO, Dr. Keith Barron met with a collector who wishes to remain anonymous, at the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines mineral show in Alsace in June 2023, who allowed him to examine a one-kilogram specimen of quartz vein material with abundant gold that he claims comes from the same locality in France. The sample (see Figure 5) closely resembles the museum sample and given the estimated grade of 46% gold (460,000 g/t, or 13,416 oz/ton Au) it is almost certainly from the same locality.

Figure 5: Photo of a new gold-bearing quartz sample shown to Keith Barron by a collector and presumably coming from the same area.

A visit to the locality in December 2022 showed abundant quartz vein material on surface and evidence of past mining activity. Part of the site contains deep water filled pits and trenches that were presumably dug in the 19th century.  Growth of moss on the quartz rocks is considered “luxuriant” and there is no evidence of modern prospecting or mining activity in the area. There has been no glaciation at the site and so the quartz vein material at surface is more or less “in situ”.

Update on Ecuador

On July 31st, Dr. Barron will meet with Mines Minister of Ecuador, Sr. Fernando Santos to discuss the potential “work around” mentioned in the Company’s press release dated June 19, 2023, to recover part or all of the former “Reserved Areas” that were initially applied for in 2016, and contain a large number of discrete magnetic, porphyry type targets.

At the same time, and in tandem with its exploration project and activities in Ecuador, the Company is excited to actively pursue this extraordinary new gold exploration opportunity in Brittany, France, mentioned above.

Haynes International (HAYN) – Lowering Near-Term Estimates; Outlook Remains Favorable

Friday, July 21, 2023

Haynes International, Inc. is a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of technologically advanced, nickel and cobalt-based high-performance alloys, primarily for use in the aerospace, industrial gas turbine and chemical processing industries.

Mark Reichman, Managing Director, Equity Research Analyst, Natural Resources, Noble Capital Markets, Inc.

Refer to the full report for the price target, fundamental analysis, and rating.

Network outage disrupts shipments. Beginning on June 10th, Haynes experienced a cyber-driven network outage that negatively impacted the company’s operations and caused delays in product shipments. By June 21st, the company’s manufacturing operations were restored along with substantially all administrative, sales, financial, and customer service functions.

Third quarter company guidance. Haynes estimates that net revenues for the quarter were impacted by approximately $18 million to $20 million resulting in third quarter net sales of $142 million to $145 million. Lower production compressed gross margin and earnings were also impacted by costs associated with the investigation and restoration efforts. In total, Haynes estimates the full earnings impact to be in the range of $0.40 to $0.45 per share. Additionally, the negative impact from raw material fluctuations, primarily for cobalt, is estimated to have a negative earnings impact of $0.09 per share. The company estimates third quarter earnings per share will be in the range of $0.65 to $0.70.

Gold Could Get Much Stronger from BRICS Plans

The BRICS Currency Project Picks Up Speed

On Friday, July 7, 2023, news broke in the financial market media that the “BRICS” (that is, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) will implement their plan to create a new international currency for trading and financial transactions, and that this new currency will be “gold-backed”. Most recently, on June 2, 2023, the foreign ministers of the BRICS – as well as representatives from more than 12 countries – met in Cape Town, South Africa (interestingly at the “Cape of Good Hope”). Among other things, it was emphasized that they wanted to create an international trading currency. Undoubtedly, this is an undertaking that could have consequences of epic proportions.

After all, the BRICS countries represent about 3.2 billion people, approximately 40 percent of the world’s population, with a combined economic output nearly the size of the economy of the United States of America. And there are also many other countries (such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, Algeria, Argentina, and Kazakhstan) that might want to join the BRICS club.

The goal of the BRICS countries is to reduce their economic and political dependence on the US dollar, challenging “US dollar imperialism”. To this end, they want to create a new international currency for commercial and financial transactions, replacing the US dollar as the means of transaction unit.

The reason is obvious. The US administration has on many occasions used the greenback as a “geopolitical weapon” and engaged in a kind of “financial warfare”: Washington sanctions enemy countries by denying them access to the US dollar capital market, but above all, it shuts them off from the international US dollar-centric payment system.

The freezing of Russia’s currency reserves (the equivalent of almost 600 billion US dollars is currently at stake) has set off alarm bells in many non-Western countries. It has reminded a number of them that holding US dollars comes with a political risk. This, in turn, has prompted many to restructure their international foreign reserves: holding fewer US dollars, switching to other (smaller) currencies, but above all, buying more gold.

But how might the BRCIS manage to swim away from the US dollar? While no details are available yet about how the new BRICS currency might be structured, it should not stop us from speculating about what lies ahead.

The BRICS could establish a new bank (the “BRICS-Bank”), funded by gold deposits from BRICS central banks. The physically deposited gold holdings would be shown on the asset side of the BRICS bank’s balance sheet – and could be denominated, for example, “BRICS-Gold”, where 1 BRICS-Gold represents 1 gram of physical gold.

The BRICS-Bank can then grant loans denominated in BRICS-Gold (for example, to exporters from BRICS countries and/or to importers of goods from abroad). To fund the loans, the BRICS-Bank makes a credit contract with the holders of BRICS-Gold: The holders of BRICS-Gold agree to transfer their deposit to the BRICS-Bank for, say, one month, or one or two years, against receiving an interest rate. What is more, the BRICS-Bank, and it can also accept further gold deposits from international investors, who can hold (interest-bearing) BRICS-Gold deposits this way.

BRICS-Gold could henceforth be used by the BRICS countries and their trading partners as international money, as an international unit of account in global trade and financial transactions. Incidentally, the new de facto gold currency would not even have to be physically minted but could be and remain an accounting-only unit while being redeemable on demand.

The exporters from the BRICS countries and the other member countries would, however, have to be willing to sell their goods against BRICS-Gold instead of US dollars and other Western fiat currencies, and the importers from the Western countries would have to be willing and able to pay their bills in BRICS gold.

How do you get BRICS-Gold? Those demanding BRICS-Gold must either get a BRICS-Gold loan from the BRICS-Bank or purchase gold in the market and deposit it with the BRICS-Bank or a designated custodian, and the gold deposit is then credited to his account in the form of BRICS-Gold.

For example, in payment transactions, the goods importer’s BRICS-Gold deposits (held, for example, at the BRICS-Bank) are credited to the account of the exporter of goods (also held at the BRICS-Bank or at a correspondent bank or gold custodian).

However, the transition, the use of BRICS-Gold as an international trade and transaction currency, would most likely have far-reaching consequences:

(1.) It would presumably lead to a (sharp) increase in the demand for gold compared to current levels, with not only gold prices measured in US dollars, euros, etc. but also in the currencies of the BRICS countries increasing (substantially).

(2.) Such an increase in the gold price would devalue the purchasing power of the official currencies – not only the US dollar but also the BRICS currencies – against the yellow metal. Also, the prices of goods in terms of the official fiat currencies would most likely skyrocket, debasing the purchasing power of presumably all existing fiat currencies.

(3.) The BRICS countries would build up gold reserves to the extent that they run, or will run, trade surpluses. They would presumably be the winners of the “currency switch”, while the countries with trade deficits (first and foremost, the US) would lose out.

BRICS official gold holdings, in billion US dollars, Q1 2023

Source: Refinitiv; The BRICS’ gold reserves amounted to 5452.7 tons in the first quarter of 2023 (market value currently around 350 billion US Dollars).

These few considerations already show how disrupting the topic of “creating a new gold-backed international trading currency” could be: The BRICS could well trigger landslide-like changes in the global economic and financial structure. Still, it will be interesting to see how the BRICS countries intend to proceed at their August 22-24 meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Refining estimates. While our 2023 EBITDA and EPU estimates are largely unchanged, we have made some quarterly adjustments lowering our second quarter EPU estimate to $1.30 from $1.35 and increasing our fourth quarter EPU estimate to $1.40 from $1.35. We have increased our coal sales volumes in the fourth quarter and modestly reduced our coal volumes and revenue per ton in the second quarter due in part to lower coal export prices during the second quarter which we think will strengthen during the second half. Second quarter crude oil prices were modestly lower than our estimates while natural gas prices were higher. We have trimmed our 2024 EBITDA and EPS estimates to $1.10 billion and $5.65 from $1.11 billion and $5.70, respectively, to reflect modestly lower coal volumes and prices compared to previous estimates.

Strong cash flow facilitates debt reduction. On July 25, Alliance will redeem $50.0 million of its 7.5% senior notes due 2025, representing 14.7% of the $339.2 million in aggregate notes outstanding. In March, the partnership purchased $26.6 million of its outstanding 2025 senior notes in the open market slightly below par. Alliance can call all or any part of its senior notes at par value and management intends to prioritize purchases with available cash flows in 2023 and 2024.

Forget About Gold and Silver, the Junior Miners’ Performance is Startling

Why are Precious Metals Spiking?

The better-than-expected inflation numbers are having a positive impact on precious metals (PM) prices. And, depending on how one is invested to provide exposure to gold or silver, the performance varied by a wide margin.  Gold commodity prices jumped by 1.3% and silver by 4.5% after the CPI report on Wednesday July 12. With even better performance were mining stocks. What is causing the leap in prices, and is there a preferred category of investment taking preference over the others?

Why the Spike in Precious Metals?

A slowing inflation trend is reviving talk of the Federal Reserve pausing or completely halting rate hikes. The market had already built two rate hikes into prices. At about the same time the U.S. CPI report was released, The Bank of Canada raised its interest rates by 25bp. The EU raised its rates on June 15, meanwhile the U.S. central bank opted not to raise rates in June.

In reaction to a difference in rates available in the U.S. compared to outside in other currencies, the $U.S. dollar tumbled 1% to a low not seen in more than a year against major peers. This made PMs, including gold and silver, a more attractive asset to preserve wealth outside the U.S. And rates have dropped, the 10-year U.S. Treasury that had been trading at 3.94% before the print, and 4.08% as recently as last week, was yielding 3.86% by mid-afternoon.

Performance of PM Related Assets

Looking out since the beginning of July, we find that both gold and silver dipped to their lows last Friday. Additionally, gold mining stocks and silver mining stocks, using GDX and SIL ETFs as proxies, had the most dramatic dip, while gold and silver (expressed in $US dollars) barely went negative on the month.

What we also see is that when gold and silver rise, or fall, there has been an amplification of the move among the mining stocks. On the upside, the magnification of the trend was even more pronounced among junior mining stocks.

Source: Koyfin

While silver junior miners are the top performers MTD at 8.42%, they are closely followed by the gold junior mining stocks at 8.42%. Larger gold mining company stocks returned 5.96%, while gold itself, only returned 2%. Silver edged out the major mining stocks returning 5.92% compared to 5.35% over the 12 day period.

The patten of performance held during the one-day of trading that CPI was released with the gold majors swapping places with silver. And gold, the commodity, up significantly in one trading day but trailing the others by a wide margin.

Source: Koyfin

Choosing PM Investments

Investing in the commodities gold or silver is fairly straightforward and can be done with most brokerage accounts today. ETFs are also as easy to trade as a stock. However, the owner receives the weighted average of all the ETFs holdings, less fees.

While individual stock pickers run the risk of reduced diversification among miners, with some understanding of the differences in companies, they may also be able to perform above the average of a broad swath of companies within an ETF for gold, silver, or both.

There are places to look for information on mining companies, the more challenging information to acquire is of the smaller junior miners – the group that have been outperforming. Channelchek can help you discover these companies and provide data, research, and videos, to help build a better understanding before committing to an investment.

Or, to really jump-start your understanding of a host of mining companies, along with those in other exciting but more difficult-to-assess industries, consider coming to Florida in early December for NobleCon19, an investment conference where you can immerse yourself in the information provided directly from Sr. management of many junior miners and along with companies of other exciting industries.

Are Central Banks Now Trying to Hoard Gold?

The Positive Sentiment Toward Gold Has a Large Tailwind

The number of countries bringing more of their gold reserves back within their own borders and in many cases buying additional gold has been on a strong uptrend. Why is this something investors should pay attention to, why is the trend accelerating, and who may benefit from the increased gold repatriation and hoarding? We explore these questions below and look for insights that investors may consider for their own portfolios.

During the first three months of 2023, central banks bought a combined 228 tonnes, the most ever seen in the first quarter of any year, according to the World Gold Council. This followed what is a record year in 2022, during which 1,136 tonnes of gold worth near $70 billion were added to the central banks’ reserves. Compared to the 450 tonnes bought during 2021, this 152% year-on-year increase might be worth paying attention to.

But the central banks aren’t just buying gold; they are also bringing what they currently own home. The number of countries that are repatriating gold reserves is high and rising. The methodical central banks’ accumulation of gold, “as far as we can tell, is unprecedented, given they’ve mostly been sellers throughout history,” wrote Mining.com in a recent analysis of the trend. “But the recent transactional trend, in particular over the past 30 years, illustrates a dramatic shift in the official attitude towards gold.”

In a global economy fraught with more uncertainty than in most periods, it makes sense that central banks looking to combat yield volatility and inflation risk see gold as a safe-haven asset. There is substantial verification of this in a thorough survey of central banks released last week. According to Invesco Global Sovereign Asset Management, more than 85% of the 85 sovereign wealth funds and 57 central banks that took part in the Invesco survey now believe that inflation will be higher in the current decade than in the last.

Countries that are also repatriating gold reserves are on the increase as central bankers look to reduce risk and moderate yield volatility and inflations erosion, they see gold as a safe-haven asset, according to the survey. There is also a fear of the unsettled war in Ukraine and the steps nations are willing to take. Last year’s freezing of almost half of Russia’s $640 billion of gold and forex reserves by the West in response to the invasion of Ukraine also appears to have created a move toward less trust. The survey showed a “substantial share” of central banks were concerned by the precedent that had been set. Almost 60% of respondents said it had made gold more attractive, while 68% were keeping reserves at home compared to 50% in 2020.

The Invesco survey also revealed 7% believe rising US debt is also a negative for the $US dollar, although most still see it as the most solid choice as the world’s reserve currency. Those that see China’s yuan as a potential contender fell to 18%, from 29% last year. Nearly 80% of the 142 institutions surveyed see geopolitical tensions as the biggest risk over the next decade, while 83% cited inflation as a concern over the next 12 months, Reuters reported.

Why Increase Exposure to Gold?

Central banks hold gold because it is expected to hold its value through turbulent times and, unlike currency, it does not rely on any issuer or government. It also enables central banks to diversify away from assets like US Treasury bonds and other dollar-exposed assets.

Source S&P Global

Central banks have been hoarding gold for well over a decade, even during periods when the global economy was considered stable and healthy.

When it comes to shifting values of assets, the power of the US Federal Reserve, or the combined power of central banks in countries like China, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, etc. it is important to understand their unique ability to move the needle. They try not to disrupt markets in their moves, but it still stands to reason that investing alongside, or mirroring, what the world’s central banks are doing has limited downside, and a huge tailwind toward the upside.

Take Away

Central banks throughout the world are buying additional stores of gold and bringing some of what they already own outside of their borders home for safer keeping. Mirroring central banks, with at least a modest allocation, in a year that already has an above-average stock market, yet is still full of the uncertainty, is something for investors to consider.

Exposure to gold need not mean buying gold buillion or gold coins; investors also get exposure by owning stock in gold mining companies, gold exchange-traded funds (ETF) and mutual funds, gold royalty companies, or gold futures and options.

Publicly traded equities of gold producers may offer the simplest and most attractive way to invest given the disproportionate percentage impact higher commodity prices may have on a company’s bottom line and valuation for a given percentage increase in the commodity itself.

Release – Comstock Announces Mineral Exploration and Mining Lease Revenues

Research News and Market Data on LODE

VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA, JULY 6, 2023 – Comstock Inc. (NYSE: LODE) (“Comstock” and the “Company”), an innovator of technologies that enable systemic decarbonization, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Comstock Northern Exploration, LLC has entered into a Mineral Exploration and Mining Lease Agreement (the “Mineral Lease”) with Mackay Precious Metals Inc. (“Mackay”), to lease the northernmost patented mining claims, mineral exploration rights and town lots (the “Northern Targets”) controlled by Comstock.

The Northern Targets encompass both the Gold Hill and northern Occidental Lode claim groups in the historic, world-class, Comstock Mining District located in Storey County, Nevada.

“Mackay has shown a keen understanding and interest in the geologic exploration associated with some of the most prospective and historically rich precious metal claims on the Comstock,” said Corrado De Gasperis, Comstock’s executive chairman and chief executive officer. “The ongoing revenue resulting from this agreement enhances our strategy to leverage physics based artificial intelligence to enable more efficient and effective mineral and materials discovery.”

The Mineral Lease has a term of 20 years and would automatically continue once mine feasibility is established and for so long as Mackay is engaged in mining operations and in full compliance with the Mineral Lease. The fees associated with the Mineral Lease included a $1.25 million initiation fee that was fully paid at signing plus $1.5 million per annum for the first four years, and $1 million per annum thereafter, in all cases plus expense reimbursements of approximately $200,000 per year. Comstock also retains a 1.5% net smelter return royalty from all future precious metal production.

Martyn Buttenshaw, Mackay’s chief executive officer said, “Our geologic team is excited and ready to commence mineral exploration and partnering with Comstock, both in terms of their existing knowledge and beyond. We have already accumulated a remarkable amount of data and insights into the northern targets and are keen to get started.”

The Mineral Lease contains non-competition restrictions prohibiting Mackay from staking property within two miles of any of the property owned or leased by Comstock in the District (including both Lyon County and Storey County properties) and mutual rights of first refusal with respect to the sale of certain mining assets for both parties.
