Euroseas signed a two-year charter contract for the M/V Leonidas Z at a rate of $20,000/day. The rate will commence upon delivery which is expected at the end of April or beginning of May. The rate is above the rate we had assumed in our model although the increased impact on revenues and earnings is minimal given the size of the Euroseas’ fleet.

We are initiating 2025 quarterly and annual estimate. Revenues and earnings will be challenged by the roll off of several attractive charters and rising interest expenses. However, results will be boosted by the addition of six ships in 2024 including four in the 2024-2Q and two in 2024-4Q. We believe the net result will mean 2025 revenues will be similar to 2024 and earnings will be modestly below 2024.

Euroseas reported a 14% year-over-year increase in revenues, net during the quarter ended December 31, 2023 due mainly to the addition of a vessel and increased fleet utilization rates. Shipping rates were largely unchanged from last year and generally predictable given a high charter coverage.

Costs were generally in line with expectations. Drydocking expenses were higher than expected due to the retrofitting of the MV Synergy Busan. Interest and financing costs continue to rise with a $23 million year-over-year increase in debt as the company makes payments on six newbuilds. In total, the company is spending $220 million on the newbuilds with $65 million already paid and an additional $130 million to be financed. Bottom-line results were near expectations.

Shipping rates improved at the end of the quarter. At the end of the third quarter, management indicated that it had locked in 60% of estimated operating days at $21,640/day and that at current spot prices, the average TCE rate for the quarter would be $19,480/day. With spot prices rising, the average TCE rate will most likely be closer to $23,000/day. The addition of a new vessel and limited drydocking will mean increased operating days. Raising the TCE rate in our models increase revenues by approximately $4 million.

Shipping rates have fallen in the 2024-1Q due to seasonal factors such as the Chinese New Year and the rain season in Brazil but remain above historical 1Q levels. We have lowered our revenue projection to reflect lower rates and decreased fees from related parties (Seanergy receives revenues for third party ship management which included abnormal gains in 2023-3Q).

Revenues improve with the addition of vessels and higher shipping rates. EuroDry took possession of three ships during the quarter and put them into service, resulting in additional operating days. The average shipping rate of $14.570 rose 20% quarter over quarter. EuroDry continues to be the most sensitive to rate changes of all the shipping companies we follow. 

Expenses went up with more ships, but costs per operating day were flat. Vessel operating and depreciation costs rose with an increase in voyage days. Vessel operating costs per voyage day were $5,421 in the most recent quarter versus $5,343 in the previous quarter and $5,366 in the same period last year. Financing costs rose with the issuance of $32.5 million to finance the acquisition of vessels.

A Seanergy division will join the Safecraft Project Consortium to retrofit a ship to use hydrogen as the main energy source. In December of last year, the European Commission founded the project and committed $10 million to the $13.5 million cost. The Safecraft consortium includes a dozen shipping, engineering, and research organizations committed to demonstrate the safety and viability of Sustainable Alternative Fuels (SAFs). Hydrogen will be the main source of electric power generation and will also help with propulsion.


Hydrogen ships are coming. Hydrogen ships (including submarines) have been around for decades, but are becoming more common place in recent years. The MF Hydra, for example, became the first hydrogen-powered ferry in 2021. China has launched a hydrogen ship in 2022 and is developing more. Kawasaki has been approved to develop an engine that will run on hydrogen for use on carriers. Other vessels such as yachts and speedboats use hydrogen fuel cells to provide electricity. Seanergy is the first Greek-based shipping company to form a partnership with Safecraft.

Rising shipping rates. Shipping rates have risen in recent months. EuroDry management reports a 2024 BPI rate of $14,225 due, in part, to conflict in the Red Sea. Although the overall impact on shipping rates is modest, we would remind investors that EuroDry is more sensitive to shipping rates than any of the shipping companies we follow. 

Longer-term shipping rate outlook remains positive. Recent rate weakness has largely been attributed to decreased demand for steel by China. EuroDry believes the Far East and Africa will provide future growth. Increased demand for ships comes at the same time as ship availability is reduced. Growing port congestion and environmentally mandated slower ship speeds combine to add days to shipping routes, reducing the availability of ships.

Euroseas reported strong 2023-3Q results due to fleet expansion and better-than-expected shipping rates. Euroseas’ average TCE rate of $30,074 was similar to last year and last quarter. Euroseas’ strategy of locking in rates for the next 12-24 months has allowed it to escape the decline in shipping rates that is hurting other shipping companies. Euroseas continues to command a premium shipping rate due to the modernization of its fleet and size of ships. 

Costs inched higher due to fleet expansion. One exception is drydocking expense, which decreased with no ships in drydock during the quarter as compared to two ships in drydock at this time last year. Note that this quarter includes a $14 million impairment charge and a $16 million gain on the termination of a charter. Absent these two non-recurring items, operating costs would have been near expectations.

Shipping rates weren’t as bad as expected. The average TCE rate for the 2023-3Q was $12,126 down 37% but better than our forecast. Operating costs declined relative to last year with the sale of an older vessel. Costs will rise in future quarters with the addition of three ships. Financing costs rose due to higher interest rates. The company will add $30 million in debt as part of the ship acquisition, financing and additional $18 million from cash on hand. With shipping rates above expectations and operating costs below expectations, EBITDA and earnings surpassed our estimates.

What’s did we learn this quarter: EuroDry repurchased approximately 52,000 shares during the quarter at an an average price of $14.43. Several ships were rechartered at favorable rates, most notably the Alexadros P ($24,500 for the December quarter versus $9,450 in the September quarter). Management believes its recent partnership arrangement establishes the company as an investment partner amongst private investors. The implication is that future such arrangements are likely. Management estimates a net asset value of $51.47, significantly above the current stock price of approximately $15 per share. The company will continue replacing older vessels with new vessels. It would like to see the market improve over the next few years before selling older vessels.

Eagle Bulk Shipping 2023-3Q revenues and earnings were in line with recently updated projections. Eagle reported an average TCE rate of $11,482/day down from $14,367/day in the previous quarter. Eagle continues to command a premium to index rates due to its fleet of newer, scrubber-installed ships.

Management indicated it locked in 68% of 2023-4Q shipping days at a favorable rate of $15,655/day. Guidance for costs per day were largely unchanged from the recently reported quarter. The upcoming jump in TCE rates should result in an improvement in cash flow. Management indicated it will likely use free cash flow to pay down debt. The company fixed additional debt with swaps during the quarter and now estimates that 75% of its debt has been fixed at a rate of 5.2%.

Shipping rates remain low but are improving. Eagle shipping rates remained low in the third quarter. Eagle has fixed approximately 66% of its shipping days for the quarter at a TCE rate near $10,900/day. Rates for unfixed shipping days dipped early in the quarter below fixed rates but exited the quarter closer to $14,000 giving hope that fourth quarter results will show improvement. We are lowering our assumed TCE rate for unfixed days to $10,500 from $12,000.

Operating costs should be fairly steady but interest costs rise. With 2023-2Q results, management provided guidance for operating costs per ownership days for the third quarter that were similar to the second quarter. One exception was interest expense which increased several million dollars with debt levels rising as part of a share repurchase program. We are increasing our estimated interest expense for the quarter and going forward.

EuroDry announced the acquisition of three ships for $65 million. The three Ultramax ships are smaller than the fleet average but newer having been built in 2014-15. The ships are expected to be delivered in Oct-Nov and are yet to be commissioned. We have assumed the ships will be commissioned at a TCE rate of $12,000/day beginning in the 2024-1Q. This assumes an improvement in drybulk shipping rates in the next three months. Our models estimate that the three ships will add $4 million to EBITDA in 2024 implying a cost of 16 times EBITDA.

Of course this is not just about 2024 results. Chairman and CEO Aristides Pittas used the opportunity of the acquisition to reiterate his belief that market fundamentals will improve in the next two to three years due to a low orderbook. We agree with Mr. Pittas’s assessment but note that the prolonged war in Ukraine (lower grain trade) and a slower-than-expected economic rebound in China (steel and ore trade) could mean improvements are not seen in 2024.

Second quarter results were above expectations. Euroseas took possession of a newbuild vessel during the quarter and was able to put it in charter at favorable rates. The vessel addition, combined with the lack of ships in drydock, meant an increase in available operating days. This helped offset a decrease in average TCE rates relative to the same quarter last year and meant that revenues, net were similar to last year.

Operating costs running in line with expectations. Like most shipping companies, operating costs are rising with inflation. The same is true for Euroseas, which reported expenses modestly higher. Issues associated with the housing and transportation of crews following the conflict in Ukraine are now behind the company. Drydocking epenses were down as none of Euroseas’s vessels were drydocked during the quarter.

EuroDry (EDRY) – Shipping rates fall, a vessel is detained, operating costs rise

EuroDry Ltd. was formed on January 8, 2018 under the laws of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to consolidate the drybulk fleet of Euroseas Ltd. into a separate listed public company. EuroDry was spun-off from Euroseas Ltd. on May 30, 2018; it trades on the NASDAQ Capital Market under the ticker EDRY. EuroDry operates in the dry cargo, drybulk shipping market. EuroDry’s operations are managed by Eurobulk Ltd., an ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certified affiliated ship management company and Eurobulk (Far East) Ltd. Inc., which are responsible for the day- to-day commercial and technical management and operations of the vessels. EuroDry employs its vessels on spot and period charters and under pool agreements.

Results continue to slide in response to falling shipping rates and a ship detention. Average TCE rates, which showed signs of improving in April, fell in May and June to an average quarterly rate of $12,179/day versus $23,490/day. Eurodry reported that one of its ships was detained for 35 days (out of service 48 days) due to alleged pollution violations resulting in the cancellation of a high-priced charter.

Operating costs rose. Total operating costs ($12.7m versus $10.2m) rose sharply. Higher voyage expenses are related to the ship detention. Management described the rise in vessel operating expenses relative to last year as due to “inflationary increases” although that explanation does not adequately explain the quarter-over-quarter increase ($12.7m versus $11.8m) in costs.
