(“Bitcoin Depot” or the “Company”), a U.S.-based Bitcoin ATM operator and leading fintech company, today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2024. First Quarter 2024 Financial Results

Revenue in the first quarter of 2024 was $138.5 million, down 15% from $163.6 million in the first quarter of 2023.

Gross Profit in the first quarter of 2024 was $14.4 million, down 26% from $19.5 million for the first quarter of 2023. Gross Profit margin in the first quarter of 2024 was 10.4% compared to 11.9% in the first quarter of 2023.

Total operating expenses were $16.6 million for the first quarter of 2024, compared to $13.6 million for the first quarter of 2023. 

Net loss for the first quarter of 2024 was $4.2 million, compared to net income of $6.1 million for the first quarter of 2023.

Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, in the first quarter of 2024 was $4.9 million, compared to Adjusted EBITDA of $13.6 million for the first quarter of 2023. Please see “Explanation and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Financial Measures” below.

Trailing Twelve Months Ended March 31, 2024

Revenue during the trailing twelve months ended March 31, 2024 was $663.9 million, up 1% from $655.9 million compared to the twelve months ended March 31, 2023.

Gross Profit in the twelve months ended March 31, 2024 was $83.4 million, up 29% from $64.6 million compared to the twelve months ended March 31, 2023. Gross Profit margin in the twelve months ended March 31, 2024 was 12.6% compared to 9.8% in the twelve months ended March 31, 2023.

Total operating expenses were $73.5 million for the twelve months ended March 31, 2024, compared to $56.9 million for the twelve months ended March 31, 2023. 

Net loss for the twelve months ended March 31, 2024 was $8.8 million, compared to net income of $13.0 million for the twelve months ended March 31, 2023.

Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, in the twelve months ended March 31, 2024 was $47.6 million, compared to Adjusted EBITDA of $49.5 million for the twelve months ended March 31, 2023. Please see “Explanation and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Financial Measures” below.

Cash and cash equivalents were $42.2 million as of the end of the first quarter of 2024.

Pivotal Trial Data Expected During 2Q24. Unicycive reported an Operating Loss of $9.2 million, with a Net Loss of $21.2 million or $(0.61) per share. Importantly, the pivotal trial for OLC, its phosphate binder in development to treat hyperphosphatemia in kidney dialysis patients, is on schedule to report topline data in 2Q24. We anticipate an FDA filing for approval in 2H24. Cash on March 31, 2024, was $48.9 million.

OLC Data in 2Q24 With NDA Expected Later In 2024. The pivotal trial is an open-label single arm study. Its primary endpoint is tolerability, with secondary endpoints of safety and pharmacokinetics. Operating Environment.  The operating environment remains relatively unchanged in terms of the overall macro environment, the availability of top talent, labor force participation, quit rates, and some other key labor factors. We continue to believe Kelly is well positioned to capitalize on any improvement in the operating environment.

Adjusted EBITDA Margin. The sale of the lower margin European Staffing business combined with management’s focus on cost reduction is showing up in the financial results, with adjusted EBITDA margin up 120bp year-over-year. Clinical Milestones Are On Schedule. Cocrystal reported 1Q loss of $4.0 million or $(0.39) per share. During the quarter,  the company made progress on its clinical trials and reiterated upcoming milestones for its Phase 1 trial testing CDI-988 in norovirus and COVID-19 and its Phase 2a trial testing CC-42344 in influenza. GameStop Frenzy Erupts as “Roaring Kitty” Resurfaces After 3 Years

In an explosive return, the man who inspired the historic GameStop “meme stock” mania in 2021 has re-emerged from a three-year hiatus – sending shockwaves through Wall Street once again.

Keith Gill, known online as the legendary “Roaring Kitty” had been silent across social media since rallying an “ape army” of retail traders to bet big against hedge funds that were shorting GameStop stock. Within hours of Gill’s first post in over 1,000 days, shares of GameStop Corp (GME) were halted for volatility multiple times as they skyrocketed as much as 110%. When the mayhem settled, the video game retailer’s stock closed a staggering 70% higher on the day.

The Roaring Kitty-inspired surge was a flashback to January 2021, when GameStop became the poster child for a new era of disruption on Wall Street. Gill’s passionate YouTube streams advocating for the struggling company had mobilized a horde of online day traders from the Reddit forum r/WallStreetBets.

By piling into GameStop shares and options contracts, these self-dubbed “apes” triggered a cataclysmic short squeeze – forcing institutional investors with massive bearish bets against GME to cover their positions at rapidly escalating prices. Within two weeks, the stock had captured the world’s attention by inexplicably spiking over 2,700% from $17.25 to an intraday peak of $483.

Hedge Fund Decimation and Hollywood Deals
Billion-dollar hedge funds like Melvin Capital were decimated by the GameStop short squeeze, requiring emergency cash injections to stay afloat. The historic market event shined a light on the fragility of Wall Street’s short-selling practices and the power of unified retail investors.

Roaring Kitty himself faced intense scrutiny over his role. Gill testified before Congress about his GameStop windfall and was slapped with a class-action lawsuit alleging he misrepresented his expertise. The saga even inspired the 2023 feature film “Dumb Money,” with actor Paul Dano portraying Gill’s journey to meme stock fame.

Continued Slow Environment. ISG’s performance continued to be impacted by slower client decision making. Clients are taking longer to commit to new investments and are developing their AI strategy. We believe that the decision making will continue to affect the Company over the fiscal year, however, the impact will lessen over the quarters as clients start to spend more.

Recurring Revenue. Management’s focus on increasing its recurring revenue continues to be showcased, as half the revenue during the quarter was recurring. The Company’s services on platforms such as GovernX and ProBenchmark continue to experience increased demand and the addition of Ventana Research is providing new relationships, potentially increasing opportunities for cross-selling, in our view. Criminal Charges. On Friday, it was announced the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California indicted former CEO Andrew Wiederhorn, former CFO Rebecca Hershinger, and the Company’s former accountant. The indictment is for the scheme to conceal $47 million in distributions Mr. Wiederhorn received in the form of shareholder loans from the IRS, FAT’s minority shareholders, and the broader investing public.

Civil Charges. Simultaneously, the SEC filed a civil complaint accusing Mr. Wiederhorn of using FAT cash to fund his lifestyle, while falsely telling the Company’s auditors, Board of Directors, and investors that neither he nor his family members had any direct or indirect material interest in the FAT cash used by Mr. Wiederhorn for personal expenditures.

ICE Pops. After topping out at over 39,000 in late February, ICE detainee population fell to about 36,900 by quarter’s end, finally bottoming out in late April in the low 34,000 level before rising once again over the past few weeks. CoreCivic ICE pops followed a similar pattern ending last week at 10,310.

Margins. With higher populations across federal, state, and local partners, higher occupancy rates, normalizing staffing cost and inflation, and per diem increases, operating margin improved once again in 1Q24. We anticipate additional improvement in 2024. Safety segment operating margin rose 210bp to 23.5%, while Community segment operating margin rose 1,120bp to 27.7%.
