Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (GLDD) has announced significant project wins, receiving $342.3 million in new dredging contracts. These latest awards are expected to further strengthen the company’s revenue visibility and enhance its already sizable project backlog, positioning GLDD for long-term growth in the highly competitive dredging sector.

Among the awarded projects is the Sabine-Neches Waterway Channel Improvement, Contract 6 Project in Texas, the largest of the contracts valued at $219.1 million. This project will commence in mid-2025 and is anticipated to complete by late 2026. Additionally, the company secured several other projects, including the Canaveral Harbor Sand Bypass Project in Florida, the Absecon Island Beach Renourishment Project in New Jersey, and others in Texas and Massachusetts.

In addition to the new awards, GLDD has approximately $350 million in low bids and pending options, bringing its total potential pipeline to more than $1.5 billion. The company highlighted that these ongoing project wins align with its strategy of solidifying its market leadership in the U.S. dredging industry. GLDD’s consistent ability to secure new projects not only reflects its strong bidding capacity but also signals sustained demand for dredging services across the U.S. coastlines and waterways.

Long-Term Outlook and Market Leadership

GLDD is the largest provider of dredging services in the United States and has successfully built a reputation for strong project execution, high equipment utilization, and solid operational performance. With a current dredging backlog of $807.9 million as of the second quarter of 2024, the company is well-positioned to bid on future projects and maintain a robust pipeline. The newly awarded contracts will further boost the company’s project visibility, ensuring continued growth through 2026.

The projects GLDD has secured cover a range of services, from beach renourishment to channel improvements, all of which are critical to maintaining the U.S. coastline, protecting natural resources, and facilitating safe and efficient maritime trade. With the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cuts, GLDD anticipates a positive market environment, supporting its long-term strategy of continued growth in the heavy construction and dredging sectors.

Strong Market Performance

In the past three months, GLDD’s stock has surged 35%, outperforming the broader heavy construction sector, which has grown by 16.2%. The company’s stock growth reflects strong investor confidence in its ability to continue winning contracts, which are crucial for revenue generation and building a strong backlog. With ongoing cost-reduction initiatives, increased equipment utilization, and a diversified project portfolio, GLDD is positioned for solid performance in the years ahead.

The company’s proactive approach to securing contracts, coupled with strong execution, continues to drive its market leadership. With market conditions expected to remain robust through 2026, GLDD’s outlook remains positive.

Release – Great Lakes Announces Delivery of Their Multi Cats, The Cape Hatteras and The Cape Canaveral

Research News and Market Data on GLDD

Oct 10, 2023

PDF Version

HOUSTON, Oct. 10, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (“Great Lakes” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: GLDD), the largest provider of dredging services in the United States, announced today the delivery of the Cape Hatteras and the Cape Canaveral, the two Damen 3013 Multi Cats built by Conrad Shipyard in Morgan City, LA.

Chris Gunsten, Great Lakes’ Senior Vice President of Project Services and Fleet Engineering, commented on the improvements the Cape Hatteras and Cape Canaveral will represent, “This is a milestone for our Company and the U.S. dredging industry. The Multi Cat brings step change safety improvements to Great Lakes’ dredge pipeline operations, which was a prime driver for the investment. Pipe handling and connection work can now take place securely on deck, which will greatly reduce the risk of man overboards. These vessels will also enhance and improve Great Lakes’ pipe and anchor operations. Further, the Multi Cats’ two crane and multiple winch and wire tugger arrangements will significantly reduce manual work and the risk of soft tissues injuries. These vessels support our strong safety culture and gives us the ability to dredge with enhanced operating efficiencies needed to maintain our shorelines and waterways.”

The two identical vessels measure approximately 99 feet in length and are each powered by three EPA Tier III Caterpillar C32 TTA engines capable of meeting speeds of 10.2 knots and will have maximum bollard pull of approximately 32 short tons. Equipped with two large winches and two deck cranes they are ideal dredge support vessels with the ability to perform a wide range of tasks including handling submerged and floating pipelines as well as anchor handling and logistics supply. Efficiency is also greatly enhanced by eliminating the need for assorted floating support equipment such as derrick barges, towboats and anchor barges.

The two vessels are the first Damen Multi Cats to be built in the U.S. and are fully compliant with the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stability criteria.

Release – Great Lakes Signs First Rock Supply Subcontract For U.S. Offshore Wind Farms With New York Quarry, Carver Sand & Gravel LLC

Research News and Market Data on GLDD

Jul 27, 2023

HOUSTON, July 27, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (“Great Lakes” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: GLDD), the largest provider of dredging services in the United States, announced today the signing of the first ever subcontract for procurement of rock for a U.S. offshore wind farm with Carver Sand & Gravel LLC (“Carver”), a U.S. quarry in the state of New York.

Through this subcontract, Great Lakes will use rock produced in the State of New York to provide scour protection for offshore wind turbine foundations, and substations at Equinor (NYSE: EQNR) and bp’s (NYSE: bp) Empire Wind I and Empire Wind II wind farms. The rock will be quarried locally, transported to the quayside on the Hudson River, and loaded onto Great Lakes’ rock installation vessel, the Acadia, which will sail to the wind farms to install the rock starting in 2025.

Great Lakes and Carver will be developing the first U.S. rock supply chain for offshore wind, including the quarry producing the rock, the stockpiling and transportation of the rock to the quayside, the port and loading facilities that will load the rock installation vessel, and other facilities along the Hudson River that will help guide the vessel in the riverway.

Eleni Beyko, Great Lakes’ Senior Vice President, U.S. Offshore Wind, commented, “This is a significant milestone for Great Lakes, our clients, Equinor, and bp, as well as Carver. We have worked closely with Equinor and bp to develop this rock supply chain for the Empire Wind projects to deliver local content from the State of New York. With safety and quality as our top priorities, we will be supporting the local communities by creating local jobs and stimulating economic activity in the state of New York.”

“Building the offshore wind industry from the ground-up in the U.S. centers on strategic private-public partnerships to not only deliver clean, renewable energy but also bring forward significant economic benefits and good-paying jobs,” said NY State Energy Research & Development Authority, President and CEO Doreen M. Harris. “The subcontract between Great Lakes and Carver is a great example of how New York’s offshore wind projects, such as Equinor and bp’s Empire Wind, continue to drive industry firsts with major investments in existing New York businesses and workers that will build the American offshore wind supply chain providing a huge win for all involved.”

New Award. Yesterday, Great Lakes was awarded a $157.4 million firm-fixed-price contract for new and maintenance hopper dredging of the Freeport Harbor Channel, according to the Department of Defense daily contract award release. This was one of the more significant capital markets projects expected to be awarded this year.

Confirmation. In the first quarter call, management had noted that the Company was the apparent low bidder for the award and yesterday’s announcement should be confirmation. This would be the third largest domestic capital project award in the Company’s history. While it typically takes up to 3 months for work to begin, this award will help improve fleet utilization in the back half of 2023 and into 2024, in our view.

Lowered Expectations. Last week, Great Lakes provided an update for 4Q22, with revenue and gross margins expected to be below previous forecasts. Recall, management had previously expected revenue of $175-$185 million and gross profit margin (gpm) in the “high single digits” for 4Q22. We had estimated revenue of $175 million and a gpm of 6.9%.

Impacts. The quarter is being impacted by a number of items, including the early retirement of the Terrapin Island, unexpected drydocking scope increases for the Ellis Island and Padre Island, weather delays on several projects in the northeast, and some project production issues.

Release – Great Lakes Provides an Update to Q4 2022

Research, News, and Market Data on GLDD

Dec 20, 2022

HOUSTON, Dec. 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (“Great Lakes” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: GLDD), the largest provider of dredging services in the United States, announced an update on its fourth quarter 2022 operations.

Revenues and gross profit margins for fourth quarter 2022 are expected to be lower than previously anticipated. These results were impacted by the earlier than expected retirement of the Terrapin Island hopper dredge, significant weather delays on several projects in the northeast and some project production issues. Additionally, unexpected drydocking scope increases resulted in additional costs and delays for the hopper dredges Ellis Island and Padre Island. The Padre Island is now out of drydock and in operation and the Ellis Island is out of drydock and  expected to be in operation before year end.

General and administrative expense and net interest expense are expected to remain relatively flat from the prior quarter.

Lasse Petterson, President and Chief Executive Officer at Great Lakes commented, “This has been a challenging year driven by an extremely slow bid market in the first half of 2022, rampant inflation, supply chain delays and more than the usual number of differing site conditions on projects. We are proactively taking steps to minimize the impact of these external factors as we are rationalizing older assets like the previously announced retirement of the Terrapin Island, cold stacking several of our oldest and least productive dredges and aggressively reducing other costs.

Looking forward to 2023, we expect bidding activity to be more in line with previous years as several large capital projects that were expected to bid in 2022 are now expected to bid in the first half of the year and our LNG prospects are moving toward final investment decisions. We are on track with our fleet modernization program and our newbuild hopper dredge, the Galveston Island, is on schedule to be operational in the second quarter of 2023. As we see the bid market start to recover in 2023, we can quickly reactivate the cold stacked vessels to take advantage of the improving market. We believe we are proactively taking the right steps adjusting to the current market conditions and expect to see their positive effects as we go into next year.”

our ability to obtain and retain federal government dredging and other contracts, which is impacted by the amount of government funding for dredging and other projects and the degree to which government funding is directed to the Corps and certain other customers, which in turn could be impacted by extended federal government shutdowns or declarations of additional national emergencies; our ability to qualify as an eligible bidder under government contract criteria and to compete successfully against other qualified bidders in order to obtain government dredging and other contracts; cost over-runs, operating cost inflation and potential claims for liquidated damages, particularly with respect to our fixed cost contracts; the timing of our performance on contracts and new contracts being awarded to us; significant liabilities that could be imposed were we to fail to comply with government contracting regulations; increasing costs to operate and maintain aging vessels and comply with applicable regulations or standards; increasing costs of fleet improvements to remain competitive; equipment or mechanical failures; impacts to our facilities and suppliers from pandemics, epidemics or outbreaks of infectious disease affecting our markets; market or supply chain disruptions as a result of war or insurrection; impacts to our supply chain for procurement of new vessel build materials: our international dredging operations; instability and declining relationships amongst certain governments in the Middle East and the impact this may have on infrastructure investment, asset value of such operations, and local licensing, permitting and royalty issues; capital and operational costs due to environmental regulations or extreme weather events; market and regulatory responses to climate change; contract penalties for any projects that are completed late; force majeure events, including natural disasters, pandemics and terrorists’ actions; changes in the amount of our estimated backlog; significant negative changes to large, single customer contracts; our ability to obtain potential financing for the construction of new vessels, including our new offshore wind vessel; potential inability to secure contracts to utilize new offshore wind vessel; unforeseen delays and cost overruns related to the construction of new vessels, including potential mechanical and engineering issues and unforeseen changes in environmental regulations; any failure to comply with Section 27 of the Jones Act provisions on coastwise trade, or if those provisions were modified or repealed; fluctuations in fuel prices, particularly given our dependence on petroleum-based products; impacts of nationwide inflation on procurement of new build materials; our ability to obtain bonding or letters of credit and risks associated with draws by the surety on outstanding bonds or calls by the beneficiary on outstanding letters of credit; acquisition integration and consolidation, including transaction expenses, unexpected liabilities and operational challenges and risks; divestitures and discontinued operations, including retained liabilities from businesses that we sell or discontinue; potential penalties and reputational damage as a result of legal and regulatory proceedings, including a pending criminal proceeding in Louisiana; any liabilities imposed on us for the obligations of joint ventures, partners and subcontractors; increased costs of certain material used in our operations due to newly imposed tariffs; unionized labor force work stoppages; any liabilities for job-related claims under federal law, which does not provide for the liability limitations typically present under state law; operational hazards, including any liabilities or losses relating to personal or property damage resulting from our operations; our ability to identify and contract with qualified MBE or DBE contractors to perform as subcontractors; our substantial amount of indebtedness, which makes us more vulnerable to adverse economic and competitive conditions; restrictions on the operation of our business imposed by financing covenants; impacts of adverse capital and credit market conditions on our ability to meet liquidity needs and access capital; our ability to maintain or expand our credit capacity; limitations on our hedging strategy imposed by statutory and regulatory requirements for derivative transactions; foreign exchange risks, in particular, as it relates to the new offshore wind vessel build; losses attributable to our investments in privately financed projects; restrictions on foreign ownership of our common stock; restrictions imposed by Delaware law and our charter on takeover transactions that stockholders may consider to be favorable; restrictions on our ability to declare dividends imposed by our financing agreements and Delaware law; significant fluctuations in the market price of our common stock, which may make it difficult for holders to resell our common stock when they want or at prices that they find attractive; changes in previous recorded net revenue and profit as a result of the significant estimates made in connection with our methods of accounting for recognized revenue; maintaining an adequate level of insurance coverage; our ability to find, attract and retain key personnel and skilled labor; disruptions, failures, data corruptions, cyber-based attacks or security breaches of the information technology systems on which we rely to conduct our business; and impairments of our goodwill or other intangible assets. Release – Great Lakes Fleet Renewal Program on Schedule With The Launch Of The Galveston Island Last Week

Research, News, and Market Data on GLDD

Dec 5, 2022

HOUSTON, Dec. 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (“Great Lakes” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: GLDD), the largest provider of dredging services in the United States, provided today an update on their fleet renewal program.

The Galveston Island, the first of two newbuild hopper dredges, is in the water and is scheduled to be in operation the first half of 2023 as planned. This new dredge is a 6,500-cubic-yard-capacity Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge which will support the modernization of Great Lakes’ dredging fleet. The dredge will be equipped with a direct high-power pump-ashore installation, dredging system automation, dynamic positioning and tracking, U.S. EPA Tier IV compliant engines, and have capabilities of running on biofuel to minimize the environmental impact. The Tier 4-compliant engines significantly reduce the vessel’s climate footprint, while other incorporated features minimize turbidity and marine species entrainment.

The upcoming delivery of the Galveston Island enables the Company to continue the rationalization of its older assets. During the fourth quarter of 2022, the Company will retire the hopper dredge Terrapin Island, which has a 42-year working history. This vessel was planned for retirement upon the Galveston Island delivery, but based on her age the Company has decided to accelerate her retirement to significantly reduce its operating, labor and maintenance costs and improve productivity for the overall fleet. Work planned for the Terrapin Island will be delayed until another hopper dredge completes its regulatory drydock at the end of December.

The retirement of the Terrapin Island will result in a non-cash write-off of approximately $8 million in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The hopper fleet renewal program will be complete in 2025 with the delivery of the sister ship to the Galveston Island, at which time Great Lakes will have the largest and most modern hopper fleet in the US.

Lasse Petterson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes commented, “After implementing our restructuring plan in 2017, we have invested in both productivity upgrades to our best performing vessels and executed on our new build program. This has provided us with additional capacity and improved efficiencies and will allow us to retire some of our older dredges and rationalize some of our older support equipment. These strategic moves will have a positive impact to our emissions footprint and our competitiveness in the coastal protection and maintenance markets as well as address the specific needs in the growing offshore wind market.”
