Release – Kratos Delivers First Order to Northrop Grumman for U.S. Armys Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node Prototype Program

Kratos Delivers First Order to Northrop Grumman for U.S. Army’s Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node (TITAN) Prototype Program

Kratos’ OpenSpace products will provide virtualized processing to support the TITAN space-ground system

SAN DIEGO
Sept. 20, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: KTOS), a leading National Security Solutions provider, announced today they have successfully delivered the first set of products to support the
U.S. Army Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node (TITAN) space-ground system prototype, which is being developed by  Northrop Grumman. The purpose of the TITAN system will be to provide near-real time data to commanders at all levels for timely targeting solutions.  Northrop Grumman was selected by the Defense Innovation Unit and the
U.S. Army Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities (TENCAP) office to develop prototype Space to Ground TITAN systems.

As part of this effort, Kratos’ OpenSpace quantum and SpectralNet products will provide virtualized downlink processing for the TITAN space-ground prototypes. Kratos was selected to the Northrop Grumman TITAN team due to the OpenSpace products’ ability to virtualize uplink/downlink processing while meeting Space, Weight, and Power (SWAP) requirements. The Kratos products will enable the demodulation of downlinks from multiple commercial satellite systems.

quantum and SpectralNet products are part of Kratos’ OpenSpace solutions family. quantum products are software replacements for traditional hardware components, such as modems, that operate at lower cost and with greater scalability to adapt more rapidly to changing missions and conditions. For example, where it can take weeks to deploy traditional ground system hardware, quantum products can be deployed and configured to support different missions in just hours. Kratos’ OpenSpace Platform, the most advanced line in the OpenSpace family, can go even further, enabling satellite operators to deploy, configure and adapt entire networks in just minutes using its orchestrated software-defined network (SDN) architecture. OpenSpace SpectralNet products digitize the satellite’s Radio Frequency (RF) signals, acting as the on-ramp to digital transformation of ground systems.

“OpenSpace technology is leading efforts across the satellite industry, both among commercial and government operators, to capitalize on the ability of virtualization and modern networking techniques to realize digital transformation goals,” said  Frank Backes, Kratos’ Senior Vice President of Federal Space Solutions. “TITAN is the newest application of OpenSpace in the
DoD that can better support the timely tactical needs of the warfighter.”

In addition, Kratos will provide engineering and manufacturing of the modified tactical shelter and related subsystem hardware for the TITAN prototypes. Kratos’ FMTV-mounted ground station platform will house and protect mission critical TITAN system components. One of Kratos’ core strengths is providing custom mobility platforms that feature power and thermal management systems, rack-ready C5ISR equipment integration, and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding up to High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) level requirements.

Edge Computing Can Take AI Out of the Cloud and to the Moon

The Most Effective Artificial Intelligence Will Never Exist in the Cloud

As SpaceX sends amateur astronauts into orbit and a related company struggles to get its EVs autopilot perfect, we can understand the increased need for edge computing. Or, as some would call edge, “AI on the fly,” the challenge of bringing artificial intelligence as close to the need for output or intervention as possible. The reality of AI computing is, the speed of WiFi, radio waves, and even light are not instant; bringing the decision-making computer as close to the outcome as possible allows for more successful outcomes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications include language processing, military decision making, robotic control, face recognition, aviation, hands-free driving, and a long list including much that has not yet been thought of. Many of the mentioned applications are now confined to data centers with a geographic address and significant storage. For many applications, AI decisions are best if onsite or at the “edge” close to the user situation that benefits from the support. Communication out to a network would slow down the response. This is what edge computing provides, onsite decisions with minimal delay in live situations.

Breaking the Climate Controlled Ceiling

Bringing AI closer to the situation with systems that are transportable and durable enough to survive the elements outside of a controlled environment is critical to AI advances. The technological considerations are massive, they include computational ability, durability, heat survival, dampness, size, weight, and power consumption.

A company meeting this challenge is One Stop Systems (OSS). They’ve developed high-end GPU-level processing with massive solid-state storage and minimal network delay. One of the “onboard” challenges being met by their products includes making computations using the surge in information from new sensors and data capture technology. These lead to even more raw information and a growing number of situations with inputs that must be resolved quickly. In real-life situations, there is no time for complex combinations of data to be sent to the Cloud to help with an imminent situation like a vehicle collision or a sudden combat event. Simply, edge computing technology is the future of AI technology – without it, the effectiveness of AI stalls at some point.

Virtual Road Show Series – Thursday, September 16 @ 1pm EDT

Join One Stop Systems CEO David Raun and CFO John Morrison for this exclusive corporate presentation, followed by a Q & A session moderated by Joe Gomes, Noble’s senior research analyst, featuring questions taken from the audience. Registration is free and open to all investors, at any level.

Registration is fast and free.  |  View All Upcoming Road Shows

Growth Trend of Edge Computing

In 2018, only 10% of generated data was created and processed on board or at the edge. By 2025, it is expected to grow to 75%. Processing simply must be on location to meet the growing needs. Transporting information to an outside server environment unnecessarily could be considered reckless. Transportable AI that has the computational bandwidth and strength is the future of non-human decision-making. Beyond environmental durability, upcoming systems would also have to provide cybersecurity at a level that isn’t possible with Cloud or server solutions (meet FIPS 140-2).

Take-Away

The guts of a machine that takes four amateur astronauts into space, or the onboard computer in a car that avoids an accident after the driver falls to sleep will be the unsung heroes in our amazing technological strides forward.  The companies behind the scenes, building out edge and other technologies that make these achievements possible are experiencing increased demand. Investors would be wise to pay attention to these underlying technologies and the providers.

At 1 pm ET today (Sept. 16)  One Stop Systems (OSS) will be live with a virtual roadshow available only through Channelchek. There is no cost to attend virtually and listen to the management presentation and submit questions. Edge computing is a very interesting and growing field; learn more by attending the virtual
event.

The SpaceX Inspiration4 Will Bring Space Tourism Close to Reality

SpaceX’s Inspiration4 Mission Will Send 4 People with Minimal Training into Orbit – and Bring Space Tourism Closer to Reality

Why Inspiration4 is Different

The biggest difference between Inspiration4 and the flights performed earlier this year is the destination.

Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic took – and in the future, will take – their passengers on suborbital launches. Their vehicles only go high enough to reach the beginning of space before returning to the ground a few minutes later. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and crew Dragon vehicle, however, are powerful enough to take the Inspiration4 crew all the way into orbit, where they will circle the Earth for three days.

The four-person crew is also quite different from the other launches. Led by Isaacman, the mission features a somewhat diverse group of people. One crew member, Sian Proctor, won a contest among people who use Isaacman’s online payment company. Another unique aspect of the mission is that one of its goals is to raise awareness of and funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As such, Isaacman selected Hayley Arceneaux, a physician’s assistant at St. Jude and childhood cancer survivor, to participate in the launch. The final member, Christopher Sembroski, won his seat when his friend was chosen in a charity raffle for St. Jude and offered his seat to Sembroski.

Because none of the four participants has any prior formal astronaut training, the flight has been called the first “all civilian” space mission. While the rocket and crew capsule are both fully automated – no one on board will need to control any part of the launch or landing – the four members still needed to go through much more training than the people on the suborbital flights. In less than six months, the crew has undergone hours of simulator training, lessons in flying a jet aircraft and spent time in a centrifuge to prepare them for the G-forces of launch.

Social outreach has also been an important aspect of the mission. While Bezos’ and Branson’s flights brought on criticism of billionaire playboys in space, Inspiration4 has tried – with mixed results – to make space tourism more relatable. The crew recently appeared on the cover of Time magazine and is the subject of an ongoing Netflix documentary.

There have also been other fundraising events for St. Jude, including a 4-mile virtual run and the planned auction of beer hops that will be flown on the mission.

The Future of Space Tourism?

Sending a crew of amateur astronauts into orbit is a significant step in the development of space tourism. However, despite the more inclusive feel of the mission, there are still serious barriers to overcome before average people can go to space.

For one, the cost remains quite high. Though three of the four are not rich, Isaacman is a billionaire and paid an estimated $200 million to fund the trip. The need to train for a mission like this also means that prospective passengers must be able to devote significant amounts of time to prepare – time that many ordinary people don’t have.

Finally, space remains a dangerous place, and there will never be a way to fully remove the danger of launching people – whether untrained civilians or seasoned professional astronauts – into space.

Release – Kratos Awarded $2.8 Million to Prototype Infrastructure Hardware and Software for Unified Data Library (UDL) to Support U.S. DoD

Kratos Awarded $2.8 Million to Prototype Infrastructure Hardware and Software for Unified Data Library (UDL) to Support U.S. DoD

Solution would allow space-related situational awareness data to be quickly accessible to commanders

SAN DIEGO
Sept. 10, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: KTOS), a leading National Security Solutions provider, announced today that the Space Systems Command (SSC) awarded the company
$2.8 million in funding to develop a prototype that automatically delivers space-related Situational Awareness (SA) data to the
Unified Data Library (UDL). The UDL is a joint initiative of the
Air Force Research Laboratory and the Space Force’s Space Systems Command. The cloud-based platform hosts space situational awareness data from dozens of commercial, academic and government organizations and provides a digital “storefront” for users of the data.

Today,
DoD satellite operators utilize disparate tools, networks and data sources at varying classification levels to attempt to build a picture of the Radio Frequency (RF) environment. Kratos’ award includes developing hardware and software infrastructure that can deliver SA data to the UDL for display and analysis. This virtualized infrastructure would be a unifying tool across entities, providing the Government’s Common Operating Environment (COE) access to near-real time SATCOM spectral data, including RF signal environment factors such as Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) alerts, and signal geolocation data at appropriate security levels.

“An infrastructure that gives immediate access to the space-related SA data the UDL provides will be critical,” commented  Frank Backes, Senior Vice President, Kratos Space Federal. “Future adversaries may interfere with large numbers of commercial SATCOM links. The UDL and RF sensor networks will help identify and address those interferers with data coming from a variety of sources including Kratos’ own global sensor network.”

One of the sources of data to the UDL, Kratos operates a global sensor network that supplies to UDL, composed of worldwide RF monitoring sites with steerable sensors and antennas covering L, S, C, X, and Ku bands. Kratos’ state-of-the-art technology for high-speed, accurate signal measurement enables advanced analytics for Space Domain Awareness (SDA). Kratos’ 24/7/365
Network Operations Center (NOC) is the central hub for monitoring and integrating raw RF data from its global sensor network. Advanced capabilities developed by Kratos have been integrated into all levels of the infrastructure, from custom algorithms employed in the sensor network, to industry-leading commercial applications used in the NOC for data monitoring, correlation and geolocation, as well as specially developed analytics that provide real meaning behind the raw data. A portfolio of services offered to government and commercial customers include satellite position and maneuver detection, signal characterization, interference detection, attribution, and mitigation and signal geolocation.
